Other Formal Training

This component of the program consists of 300 hours of formal structured training.

 

Core training (approximately 150 hours)

 
  • Permaculture Design Certificate (minimum 70 hours)
  • Master Composter or Compost Educator Certificate - or minimum 20 hours of composting training
  • Organic soil management - miminum 20 hours
    (examples: soil biology; compost tea / EM; Albrecht / Reams / biological soil fertility management)
  • Landscape / plant health management - minimum 20 hours
    (examples: biodiversity / beneficial plants and insects; biodynamic agriculture; compost tea / EM; alternative diagnostics methods such as radionics)
  • Environmental stewardship - minimum 20 hours
    (examples: streamkeeper; natural habitat restauration; environmental farm management; wilderness parks interpreter; naturescape ambassador; wildlife tree assessment)

 

Interest-based training (approximately 150 hours)

 
  • Organic ornamental horticulture
    (examples: ecological landscape design; arboriculture; turf management; greenhouse / nursery plant production' edible ornamental landscaping)
  • Organic food production
    (examples: formal training component of agriculture apprenticeships; greenhouse food production; biodynamic agriculture; crop rotations; companion planting; specialty food production)

 

The student must submit a written plan of his or her proposed course of study. This plan identifies the studen'ts area of specialization, lists the formal training the student will undertake, and explains how it supports the learning goals. It also establishes a time frame within which this training is to be completed.

The mentor must sign all documentation the student submits to Gaia College in support of formal training

Gaia College may require additional information in order to approve the proposed training plan, and may at it sole discretion refuse to grant credit to certain training. No credit will be granted for prior training, except for:

  • Courses offered by Gaia College
  • Permaculture design certificates (minimum 70 hours of training)
  • Master Composter or Compost Educator certificates
