What Pesticides Really Do In Your Garden
As we began to bring our educational programs into the classrooms
and into the community we realized that the need for information
far outstrips our ability to meet it.
Delivering presentations in person is a lot of fun, but it's not
very efficient. Hence the idea to turn some of our powerpoint presentations
into narrated slide shows that you purchase for presentation to
your groups:

Here is the introductory text:
Much excellent information is available from many sources about the
human health effects of pesticides. This presentation is not about
that.
What we will talk about is the effect of pesticides in your garden,
and in your environment.
It appears that the grassroots movement to ban the use of certain
pesticides for cosmetic purposes in urban environments has hit a
snag. The question foremost in the minds of politicians is: what
are the alternatives? Our municipal governments are reluctant to
deprive the landscape industry and the population of what –
on the surface – seem to be essential tools to maintain the
health and beauty of our urban green space.
This educational series is about the alternatives. It’s about
healthy gardening, without the use of pesticides and other harmful
chemicals. As you progress through these presentations you will
come to understand the natural processes at work in an ecosystem,
and how you can encourage and support them to create beautiful healthy
gardens. Yes, even lawns.
In fact, I believe that the whole debate about the pros and cons
of pesticide use will become a complete non-issue, because you will
come to see that
1. We don’t need pesticides to have beautiful gardens
2. Pesticides are counterproductive, damaging Mother Nature’s
delicate and highly interdependent natural balance, and predisposing
our plants and gardens to more disease and other problems.
But let’s take this one step at a time. Before we can begin
to examine the effects of pesticides on our gardens we need to understand
a bit more about how our gardens work. - or would work, if we allowed
Mother Nature to do her job.
Here then are the topics we will explore:
- How does your garden work?
|
|
|
- How do pesticides affect your garden and the environment?
|
- What are the alternatives?
